Apartment in Barcelona rooted in tradition

The interior draws on Spanish architecture and on what is best in it: proportion, craft, and colour used without fear. The heart of the project is the original Spanish ceramic floor, which gives the apartment a strong local character. Its decorative rhythm becomes the background for a calm, noble palette of cream, mint, powder pink and deep green.

In Barcelona a patterned floor is such a defining element that in many buildings it is treated as a monument. We treated it as the starting material. Instead of covering the ceramics with rugs and heavy furniture, we cleared the space around it: the furniture stands on slim legs, the sofa is low, the side tables are transparent. The pattern stays visible throughout the flat and leads the eye from one room to the next.

The colours come from the same craft tradition. Mint green shades, powder-pink glass tables and deep green upholstery are taken from Spanish ceramics rather than from a trend forecast.

The lighting is deliberately sculptural — Murano glass, ceramic shades and terracotta-coloured lamps — while the kitchen stays quiet: travertine, marble and handleless fronts, so that the architecture keeps the leading voice.

The preserved stucco and the tall windows with shutters do the rest. Nothing here has been stripped of its history; it has simply been given room to breathe.
